SEOUL — Samsung has officially launched its highly anticipated One UI 8.5 software update, with the global rollout starting May 6 for the Galaxy S25 series. The stable release, which first debuted in the company’s home market of South Korea, follows an extensive five-month beta testing phase.
Built on the Android 16 platform, One UI 8.5 was initially introduced on the flagship Galaxy S26 series in February and underwent limited testing late last year. The latest update brings significant design refinements and a newly expanded suite of Galaxy AI features.
Perhaps the most notable addition is the integration of AirDrop support via Samsung's Quick Share platform. This cross-platform compatibility marks a significant shift in mobile data sharing, effectively removing long-standing barriers between different operating system ecosystems.
Beyond connectivity, the update introduces a fully customizable Quick Panel and a smart lock screen that automatically adjusts its layout to complement the user's wallpaper. Audio capabilities have also been upgraded with the inclusion of Bluetooth Auracast broadcasting.
Samsung has also prioritized practical, everyday utility. The Weather app and home screen widgets have been redesigned, while a new option allows users to temporarily disable the Auto Blocker for greater flexibility during software installation.
For productivity and performance, One UI 8.5 features optimized power-saving modes designed to significantly extend battery life. The screen recorder tool has been refined to allow capturing specific screen areas, and the Samsung DeX desktop mode can now remember the exact window sizes of frequently used applications.
The global rollout is actively expanding. Following the Galaxy S25 series, Samsung confirmed the update will soon reach other premium devices, including the Galaxy S25 FE, the entire S24 and S24 FE lineups. Recent foldable devices—namely the Galaxy Z Fold7, Z Flip7, Z Fold6, and Z Flip6—alongside the Galaxy Tab S11 and Tab S10 series, are also on the official support list. Users can access the upgrade through the software update section in their device settings.
Industry analysts note that One UI 8.5 delivers substantial practical value that exceeds typical mid-cycle update expectations. By bridging ecosystem gaps with cross-platform sharing and refining granular details—from DeX window memory to targeted screen recording—Samsung’s extensive beta period appears to have yielded a highly polished update tailored to users' everyday digital habits.
