
Samsung's upcoming Galaxy smartphones, powered by the new One UI 9, are expected to integrate Eclipsa Video—a next-generation HDR format tailor-made for mobile devices.
Recently gaining native support in Google’s Android 17, Eclipsa Video is an open-source HDR standard co-developed by tech giants Google and Apple, alongside NBCUniversal. Unlike traditional formats that rely purely on dynamic video metadata, Eclipsa Video takes a smarter approach. Similar to Samsung’s HDR10+ Adaptive technology, it actively calculates ambient lighting and your device's specific screen hardware to deliver the perfect brightness level on the fly.
Its standout feature? Putting an end to those blinding bursts of screen brightness when you’re scrolling through social media in a dark room. Eclipsa Video uses a reference white standard to ensure that UI elements, text, and everyday colors remain crisp and clear even while HDR content is playing. For larger displays like TVs, the technology dynamically expands highlight zones based on the physical limits of the panel, effectively eliminating washed-out or faded colors.
On the audio side, the companion solution—Eclipsa Audio, a joint venture between Google and Samsung—has already made its way into select TVs and soundbars since 2025. Industry insiders predict that Eclipsa Audio and Eclipsa Video will soon be bundled as a powerful new audiovisual alliance, poised to directly challenge the current dominance of Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision.
HDR10+ Technologies LLC, an industry coalition of over 180 companies that includes Samsung, will handle the management and licensing of this new video format. With the upcoming One UI 9 update built on Android 17, the South Korean tech giant’s smartphones and tablets are perfectly positioned to be the first devices to bring this next-generation viewing experience to consumers.
