
Samsung's premium smartphones could soon see a massive jump in magnetic wireless charging speeds, potentially reaching up to 50W, thanks to anticipated shifts in the global Qi standard.
According to sources from IT Home, the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) recently convened a special meeting to discuss raising the magnetic wireless charging power cap to 50W. While this specification has yet to be officially ratified, industry analysts project the new standard will be finalized by 2028. Smartphones featuring this ultra-fast charging capability are expected to hit the market that same year, or by 2029 at the latest.
Although Samsung was notably absent from the meeting—which saw attendance from over 20 industry heavyweights including Apple, Google, Xiaomi, and Oppo—the South Korean tech giant's hardware roadmap remains unfazed. In fact, Samsung has already successfully developed power management chips capable of supporting 50W wireless charging. Once the WPC officially rolls out the new standard, the company is well-positioned to immediately integrate the technology into its flagship devices.
Currently, the Galaxy S26 Ultra holds the title for Samsung's fastest wireless charging phone, yet it caps out at 25W. With its 5,000 mAh battery, the device takes approximately 1.5 hours to reach a full charge using a Qi2.2 charger and a compatible magnetic case. Upgrading to a 50W standard for a comparable battery would slash that charging time significantly, bringing it down to under 60 minutes.
As the smartphone market trends toward high-density batteries exceeding 5,000 mAh, adopting 50W wireless charging is viewed as a crucial preparatory move for Samsung. This upgrade will ensure that future Galaxy S models and foldable devices can maintain optimal charging times, even as battery capacities continue to grow.
