While One UI 8.5 is still deep in its development and beta testing phase, Samsung appears to be shifting its focus toward the next generation of its mobile interface. According to recent reports, the tech giant is quietly laying the groundwork for One UI 9, a major update expected to be built on Android 17 and likely to debut alongside the company’s 2026 flagship lineup.
Evidence of this roadmap appeared in a recent internal build, specifically within the software update interface. Samsung currently utilizes a dedicated system app simply titled "Software Update" to manage these screens. In the latest version of this app, code sleuths spotted a header image tagged as "major." The graphic features a distinct "9" design, serving as a clear placeholder banner for the unannounced One UI 9.
This visual approach aligns with changes introduced in One UI 8.5, which swapped the traditional text-only update screen for a more graphical header layout. The fact that Samsung is already prepping specific assets for One UI 9 suggests a well-defined roadmap is in place, even as work on version 8.5 remains unfinished.
For industry watchers, this isn't entirely surprising. Samsung traditionally treats its "x.5" updates as iterative refinements—focusing on polish and features without jumping to a new Android base. In contrast, "x.0" releases are positioned as major overhauls accompanying a brand-new Android version. With One UI 9, that foundation is all but confirmed to be Android 17.

Currently, these represent the earliest indicators that development on One UI 9 has kicked off. However, the presence of these assets in internal builds signals that the path to 2026 is taking shape, running parallel to the finalization of One UI 8.5 and the features destined for the future Galaxy S26 series.
