When One UI 7 was launched, the Now Bar attracted attention with its ability to allow users to quickly interact with some applications right from the lock screen. However, this feature is still quite limited. Now, with One UI 8 and support from Android 16, the Now Bar is about to enter a "transformation" phase with many truly useful improvements.
One UI 8 makes the Now Bar more convenient than ever
On One UI 7, the Now Bar does not support the secondary screen of foldable devices like the Galaxy Z Flip, making the experience not really complete. But from the Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Flip 7 FE onwards, Samsung has allowed real-time notifications to be displayed on the external screen when the device is folded, thanks to integration with Android 16's Live Notifications API.
According to information from technology expert Mishaal Rahman, the number of applications compatible with the Now Bar will be expanded from 20 to 35 in the near future. This means users will have more options for quick access without unlocking their phone, from familiar tools to third-party services.
Currently, the list of supported apps includes features like Samsung's own timer, notes, voice recorder, TV control, emergency share, along with Google Maps, Uber, Uber Eats, and Waymo. Samsung hasn't revealed specifically what the 15 new apps will be, but this addition will certainly make the Now Bar more usable than ever.
While the popularity of the Now Bar hasn't really exploded, it's clear that Samsung is quietly building the foundation to make it an integral part of the One UI experience. As developers start to take advantage of the new API, Galaxy users can expect a much smarter, more convenient, and more personalized lock screen.
