Samsung's upcoming One UI 8.5 update is expected to bring many interface changes, including dark version app icons that automatically adjust to dark mode, making the home screen more harmonious and easier to see at night.

For many years, Samsung's dark mode has only applied to areas such as settings, notification panel and system apps, while app icons still keep a light background. When switching to a dark background, the light-colored icons become out of sync, making the overall interface inconsistent.

According to @GalaxyTechie, Samsung is testing a new set of dark icons on One UI 8.5. When dark mode is turned on, some apps will automatically switch to a dark background. In addition, Samsung is also redesigning all icons in a new 3D style, applicable to both light and dark modes, instead of the flat style currently used.

Samsung is said to upgrade the icon color synchronization method. Android's Material You theme system relies on developers providing monochrome icons, which can sometimes be inconsistent. On One UI 8.5, the Android 16-based update can automatically switch icons to monochrome, making the interface more consistent.

Samsung is expected to start testing One UI 8.5 on December 8, with users in the US, UK, Korea, and Germany first. The Galaxy S25 series beta has already appeared on internal servers, suggesting that the trio of flagships will likely be the first devices to experience the new software platform.
