SEOUL — Samsung's smartwatches are proving to be more than just tech accessories. They are becoming critical lifesavers, shielding construction workers from the severe heat waves currently punishing job sites.

Searing summer heat has long been a nightmare for outdoor workers. To tackle this, Samsung has teamed up with South Korea’s Ministry of Employment and Labor to deploy a unique tool: using the LTE version of the Galaxy Watch to monitor vital signs and preempt heatstroke right on the construction site. This initiative is part of the newly optimized SmartThings Pro smart safety package.

The protective mechanism is highly practical. Instead of requiring workers to monitor their own temperatures, the system automatically scans environmental factors like temperature and humidity. It then cross-references this data in real-time with the wearer's heart rate and physical exertion levels.

If the "feels-like" temperature hits a dangerous threshold (between 33 and 38 degrees Celsius, or 91 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit), managers receive an immediate flashing alert on their screens. Seconds later, a vibration alert is sent straight to the worker's Galaxy Watch, signaling them to drop their tools and head to the shade before exhaustion sets in.

This guardian system is already moving from concept to reality. It is currently undergoing rigorous testing at Samsung's massive Pyeongtaek chip plant construction site. To prevent false alarms, engineers collaborated with Incheon National University and Samsung Medical Center to develop a smart algorithm. The system "learns" an individual's physical profile—factoring in height, weight, and age—to accurately predict exactly when their body is pushed to the limit.

A representative from Samsung's enterprise solutions division emphasized that this technology was built for survival in high-risk, heavy industry environments. Beyond saving lives, all collected health data is safeguarded by the ISO 27001 international security standard, ensuring that workers' personal information remains strictly confidential.
