Each new version of One UI marks a significant step forward in performance, security, and user experience. However, in recent years, Samsung seems to be changing its software release strategy between its two flagship product lines, the Galaxy S and the Galaxy Z foldable phones. So, what will be the company's next move with One UI?
Samsung may adopt a software update branching strategy between the Galaxy S and Galaxy Z lines
Instead of releasing an intermediate update for One UI 7 based on Android 15, Samsung has switched directly to One UI 8 based on Android 16, and launched it alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7. This move is possible because Google released Android earlier than usual this year.
According to the usual cycle, after One UI 8, users would expect One UI 9. However, it seems that Samsung will introduce One UI 8.5 – still based on Android 16 – alongside the Galaxy S26 series launching early next year. One UI 9 will then be released alongside the next generation of foldable phones in 2026, when Android 17 is officially released.
A source from @UniverseIce suggests that this will be Samsung's long-term update roadmap: the Galaxy Z series will receive a major One UI update each year, coinciding with a new version of Android, while the Galaxy S series will receive an enhanced One UI X.5 update.
While both lines share the same Android platform, the X.5 will bring significant improvements to the Galaxy S series, including a new interface design, enhanced AI features, and a host of software improvements. While foldable phones are growing, the Galaxy S is still the flagship product, so it's no wonder Samsung wants to prioritize a richer software experience for this mainstream user group.
