Samsung Display has officially launched Oblyx, a dedicated gaming laptop display brand, aiming to capitalize on the rapidly expanding market for premium entertainment devices.
The new brand made its debut at Asia's premier technology and entertainment exhibition in Shanghai, China. The South Korean tech giant transformed its exhibition space into a true tech festival, showcasing over 50 premium devices, ranging from laptops and smartphones to computer monitors. To demonstrate the displays' capabilities, Samsung partnered with gaming titan Tencent, allowing users to experience new blockbuster titles directly on these next-generation panels.
The name "Oblyx" draws inspiration from obsidian, a natural stone known for its deep black hue. This symbolizes the displays' ability to deliver perfect true blacks, ultra-fast response times, and high contrast ratios—crucial elements for the ultimate gaming experience. Samsung plans to blanket the market with a diverse product lineup, spanning 14-, 16-, and 18-inch screen sizes, paired with ultra-smooth refresh rates of 120Hz, 165Hz, and 240Hz.

Samsung's decision to launch in China rather than its home turf of South Korea is a calculated strategic move. According to data from market research firm Omdia, the annual growth rate for gaming laptops equipped with next-gen displays in China has hit record highs, far outpacing the global average. In a short period, the country's share of the global gaming PC industry has surged from 4% to 38%.
A marketing strategy representative from Samsung Display stated that the new brand's launch is a milestone that helps the company establish a direct connection with the gaming community, while simultaneously expanding partnerships with major PC manufacturers in the region. This is viewed as a strategic trump card to consolidate Samsung's dominance in the fiercely competitive and fast-growing premium display market.
