Unearthed in the recent Android 17 Beta, Google is currently testing a powerful new tool dubbed Notification Rules. The feature allows users to establish custom triggers based on specific apps or even individual contacts, marking what could be the most significant upgrade to the mobile notification ecosystem in years.

Rather than tweaking each app individually, users will be able to set pre-defined parameters—such as silencing specific applications, blocking alerts from certain contacts, or pushing critical messages to the top of the pile. The operating system handles the rest, automatically applying these rules to drastically reduce manual intervention.

Early test builds indicate Android is developing a broad spectrum of notification actions: muting, outright blocking, silent grouping, and highlighting (or a combination of highlighting with an active alert).
