Samsung Galaxy S25 may soon get One UI 8

Samsung typically releases new versions of Android for its Galaxy lineup at the end of the year, but with One UI 7.0 based on Android 15, it was almost three months behind schedule. However, that doesn't seem to be the case with One UI 8.0 based on Android 16, as a test build for the Galaxy S25 has appeared on Samsung's servers two months earlier than usual.

According to Tarun Vats, a Samsung update tracker, a new firmware for the Galaxy S25 Ultra has been spotted with version S938BXXU1BYC1. Based on Samsung's software naming convention, this could be One UI 8.0 based on Android 16. This is especially notable considering that this test build is almost two months earlier than usual.

Samsung uses a naming convention to identify One UI versions. In the software number sequence, the fourth letter from the end indicates the One UI version. When a device is launched, it starts with an ‘A’. If it gets the next major update, the letter changes to a ‘B’. For example, the Galaxy S25 is currently running version S931BXXU1AYB5, with the ‘A’ indicating that it was the One UI version when it launched. Meanwhile, the newly leaked firmware has a ‘B’, indicating that it is a major update.

Many people might assume that this is just One UI 7.1 based on Android 15, but there are three reasons why that is not true. First, Samsung usually launches One UI x.1 with its new Galaxy S series, but this time it is not. Second, Google is expected to release Android 16 in June, three months earlier than usual. Third, leaks suggest that Samsung will skip One UI 7.1 and One UI 7.1.1 to focus on releasing One UI 8.0 on time.

Typically, Samsung releases a new version of Android in Q2. However, with One UI 8.0 arriving two months earlier than usual, it's likely that the stable version will also reach users sooner than expected.
