Samsung has surprised many people by releasing a new update for the Galaxy S20 series, even though the company had previously officially stopped supporting the software for these devices. The July 2025 security patch is currently being deployed in the US, starting with devices on the Verizon network.

The Galaxy S20, S20+, and S20 Ultra trio were launched in early 2020, marking a change in design and performance for Samsung's flagship line. After 5 years of regular updates, Samsung announced that it would end software support for this series from April 2025. However, the new update is now being released for Verizon devices with software code numbers G981VSQSDHYG2, G986USQSDHYG2, and G988USQSDHYG2, respectively.

It’s not unheard of for Samsung to release a security patch after officially ending support, but it’s not uncommon either. The move shows that the company still cares about its loyal group of users who are still using the Galaxy S20, providing peace of mind against new security vulnerabilities.

However, since the support period has ended, the Galaxy S20 will no longer be protected against future security threats. If you’re still using this model, now might be a good time to upgrade. The current Galaxy S25 series is not only more powerful, but Samsung has also committed to providing software support for up to 7 years, providing long-term peace of mind for users.
