
As millions of Galaxy owners eagerly await the official rollout of One UI 8.5, Samsung appears to be setting its sights on the next big leap.
Recent leaks indicate that the South Korean tech giant has been quietly developing One UI 9.0 over the past few weeks. In fact, Samsung has already begun internal testing of early One UI 9 beta builds for its upcoming Galaxy S26 flagship series, despite the One UI 8.5 beta program remaining unfinished.
The first One UI 9 test build, based on the unreleased Android 17 operating system, was spotted on Samsung's own servers by reputable leaker Tarun Vats. Designed for the Galaxy S26 Ultra, the firmware carries the build number S948BXXU2ZZE7. The "Z" positioned fourth from the end is a standard industry indicator confirming it as a beta test version.
Historically, this early appearance isn't entirely a shock. Around this time last year, the initial One UI 8.0 builds for the Galaxy S25 series also began surfacing. The stark difference, however, is that One UI 7 was already rolling out to devices back then, whereas the current 8.5 version is still trapped in its testing phase.

Industry observers attribute this delay to the massive user interface overhauls expected in One UI 8.5. In contrast, the forthcoming One UI 9.0 is predicted to be a lighter update with fewer disruptive changes.
The prolonged 8.5 beta—which has stretched far beyond Samsung's usual timelines—has inevitably fueled speculation. Some users suspect the company might be intentionally withholding the polished software to drive upgrades to the new Galaxy S26 series once it launches.
Ultimately, Samsung's current software roadmap is sending mixed signals to its user base. Fast-tracking Android 17 and One UI 9.0 for the Galaxy S26 demonstrates a commendable commitment to long-term, rapid software support. However, keeping legacy device owners in limbo over One UI 8.5 risks alienating a loyal fanbase. To maintain trust, Samsung needs to deliver a stable 8.5 update soon, before shifting the spotlight entirely to the future.
